Sunday guessing game

Taking a leaf from Bill Luse, who occasionally does guessing games of this sort:

Without looking it up via Google or any other method, can you name the following song and singer given this snippet?
Have you been half asleep
And have you heard voices?
I've heard them calling my name.
Is this the sweet sound
That calls the young sailor?
The voice might be one and the same.
Hint: These lyrics are surprisingly profound given their source. Also, if you can identify them without looking them up, you will probably enable other people to peg your approximate age.

I admit, I'd forgotten all about the song and its source until reminded by a Facebook friend yesterday.

No clue. Nada. Zip. Arresting lyrics, though.

I had a friend on FB tell me that she couldn't stand it and looked it up on Google. I'll give it another day and then give the answer in comments.

'That calls the young sailor?'

No-one sings about sailors any more.
Post war?
American?
Post war American...erm....er...

Erm.

It's definitely post-WWII and definitely American. I would say that "a voice calling the young sailor" is a literary trope that was already more than a little outdated at the time of the song itself, but it fit with the tone of the lyrics.

Rainbow Connection by Kermit the Frog!

Marie has it! Congratulations, Marie! You get a dozen e-cookies. You can imagine them as being any flavor you wish, since they're just e-cookies.

The song is "The Rainbow Connection," sung by Kermit the Frog in the opening scene of the original Muppet Movie, 1979.

I'd not heard it in about thirty years until someone reminded me of the movie the other evening. He was looking for it for his little girl.

The song is pretty much a pure instance of 1970's feel-good fluff, but in addition to a fetching tune, it has something else going for it, namely, some rather surprisingly good lyrics.

Here is the link to the movie. The song begins at about 4:30.

I feel cheated somehow.....

A frog.

A little green frog.
A little green puppet frog with ongoing 'management issues' who (if 'Halfway Up The Stairs' was any guide) sang distinctly flat and.....oh I'll just say it!
Croaky.
He sung all croaky!
There I said it.

Next quiz should be strictly 'No Overworked Amphibians'.

Yeah, but that's the whole point of taking the verse out of its original setting and presenting it as lyrics on its own. They are easily overlooked otherwise, because one says, "It's just Kermit the Frog singing a schmaltzy 70's song." I mean, it _is_ Kermit the Frog singing a schmaltzy 70's song, but it's rather a pleasant surprise to find something that good in the middle of a schmaltzy 70's song sung by a frog.

No, I'm with you...and the croaky frog.
I graduated in Eng. Lit. but I know a diamond in the dirt can be a wonderfully rewarding.

(I think a similar phenomena is apparent with TV advertising jingles & themes.
Many a unstarted symphony has sold a packet of chocolate biscuits!)
